FRANCESCO MARIA SAPONARO

On 3 June 1897, Francesco and Maria Rosa were married in S. Luca Abbate Roman Catholic Church in Armento, Potenza, Basilicata. Soon after if not before, plans were in process for the bride and groom to emigrate to Philadelphia where they will join Maria's brother Luca Antonio Mancuso and Vitale Antonio and Giuseppe Saponara of New York. They were joined by two other Armento travelers, Maria Rosa's brother, Pietro Nicola Mancuso and Domenico Bello, a sixteen year old shoemaker, who settled in Boston. After tearfully saying goodbye to family and friends gathered in the piazza, they began the long, difficult trek to Naples.

On October 8,1897 Francesco and Maria boarded the S.S. Werra and began their steerage trip to the United States When the ship docked in New York on October 27, 1897, Maria in particular, being with child, had to be greatly relieved. According to the many articles written on the subject of traveling in steerage, earlier steam ship crossings of the Atlantic were always bad to very bad depending on the weather and other steamship variables; but the discomfort of being pregnant on such a voyage had to be horrendous.

The first address recorded for them, 819 So. 9th Street, is noted on the birth document of their first born Filippo, March 27, 1898. According to these records, Francesco’s first occupation in the new land was boot black. As noted on census records, he later became janitor at the public school and via family verbal records printer at the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin.
